What we will do
Day 1: Johannesburg to Skukuza via Pilgrim's Rest (600 km). An early (06:00) departure from Johannesburg, with pick-up at your address. We travel eastward into Mpumalanga, passing Witbank (the largest coal-producing area in Africa), Belfast and Lydenburg, then over the spectacular Long Tom Pass to Sabie for refreshments. A scenic drive takes us to Pilgrim's Rest for lunch, with time to explore this living museum and national monument and soak up the life and times of the pioneering gold diggers. We continue to the park and on to Skukuza for the night.
Day 2: Skukuza, Lower Sabie and Satara. An early morning game drive, back for breakfast, then a visit to the museum and the Stevenson-Hamilton library with its fascinating historical records. The rest of the day is spent game viewing on the way to our overnight stop at Satara.
Day 3: Satara to Olifants. We continue through the park, game viewing along routes with good recent sightings and learning about the park's history, geology, plants and animals, on the way to Olifants Rest Camp.
Day 4: Olifants to Shimuwini. We make our way slowly northward, stopping at waterholes and enjoying the bushveld, its wildlife and its birdlife. After lunch and relaxation at Letaba, we spend the night at Shimuwini Private Rest Camp.
Day 5: Shimuwini to Shingwedzi. The day is spent travelling through the Mopane and bushwillow woodlands to Shingwedzi for the night.
Day 6: Shingwedzi to Punda Maria. We continue north through Mopane shrubveld to Pafuri, where we enjoy lunch at the picnic site on the banks of the Luvuvhu River. This is an excellent birding area, home to a number of rare specials. We also visit Crooks Corner, where Mozambique, Zimbabwe and South Africa meet, and learn about its past secrets. We then return part of the way to Punda Maria Rest Camp for the night.
Day 7: Punda Maria to Johannesburg (600 km). An early morning start for the journey home via Louis Trichardt, arriving at about 18:00.
