Johannesburg does not have Table Mountain, but we do have a mountain and a cableway, and the views are spectacular. This tour is an add-on to any of the tours listed below. If you have a full day and some spare time, add this excursion to your tour.
The original cableway was built in 1973 with materials from the Swiss manufacturer GMD Muller. Over the decades it gave countless visitors a bird's-eye view of the Hartbeespoort Dam and surrounds, and became a popular paragliding destination. It fell into disrepair and closed in 2005, and has since been rebuilt into a uniquely South African aerial cableway experience.
The revamp used the latest materials and technology: new cable cars from Swiss company CWA Constructions, new galvanised cabling from Fatzer AG, and touch-screen, auto cabin spacing and cabin locator technology for a comfortable and safe ride. Fourteen hi-tech cable cars, each carrying six passengers, can transport up to 500 people an hour (round trip).
The cableway can be added on to the Lesedi Cultural Village, Cheetah Sanctuary, Elephant Sanctuary, Monkey Sanctuary and Lion Safari Park tours. This tour is weather dependent.
