Let African Timeout take you on a half-day adventure at the Bushbabies Monkey Sanctuary.
The sanctuary is privately owned and non-subsidised, covers about 7 hectares, and sits beside the elephant sanctuary in one of the kloofs of the Magaliesberg mountain range. In Hartbeespoort, North West Province, it is one of only eight free-release primate sanctuaries in the world. The primates are received through public donations and supported by funds from guided tours and curio sales.
Squirrel, spider and capuchin monkeys, previously raised as household pets or bred for the pet trade, are given a new lease on life in a wild setting of waterfalls, lush vegetation and natural mountain springs. The goal is to let them live as they would in the wild.
The sanctuary values community education. Guests leave understanding that monkeys do not make good pets and are better suited to a natural, free-living environment.
The tour itself takes about an hour and covers about 3 km on elevated walkways, where the primates are spotted in their natural environment. Casual walking shoes are best.
