About this tour

Join African Timeout for an energetic full-day tour of Soweto, a "city within a city". Soweto is a sprawling metropolis and one of the most famous settlements in Africa, where South Africa's history was written on the streets, in the schools and in the shebeens. This diverse, patriotic community led the fight for justice and freedom in the late 1970s, and today it is a living monument to the history of the political struggle and to the hopes of a dynamic, multicultural community.

Our journey starts with a 2-hour cycle tour of Orlando and surrounds, checking out the daily lives of the people living and working in Soweto. We visit the Mandela House Museum before returning to the starting point at Hector Pieterson.

A well-deserved lunch is enjoyed at one of the famous shebeens, and we end with a drive through Soweto, visiting Kliptown.
