Soweto, a city within a city, is a sprawling metropolis and one of the most famous settlements in Africa, where South Africa's history was written on the streets, in the schools and in the shebeens. This diverse, patriotic community led the fight for justice and freedom in the late 1970s. Today Soweto is a living monument to the history of the political struggle and to the hopes of a dynamic, multicultural community facing the challenges of transformation.
Our journey begins entering Soweto at the Bara hospital and taxi rank. We visit Walter Sisulu (Freedom) Square, where the Freedom Charter was chiselled out at the 1955 congress, and get the lowdown on the different housing types as we pass the Kliptown informal settlement. We visit Regina Mundi, an integral part of the struggle. The Mandela House Museum and the Hector Pieterson Museum are our next stops, on Vilakazi Street in Orlando West. With commentary on the way of life and the struggle history, we meander through Soweto taking in everyday life.
Lunch is included and is taken at one of the shebeen restaurants in the area.
This tour can be extended with add-ins at extra cost: a bungee jump off the Soweto twin towers (R630 per person) or a visit to a children's home (R300 per person, as a donation).
