About this tour
Join African Timeout and a specialist guide to explore this one-of-a-kind wonder of the world.
The Vredefort Dome, about 120 km south-west of Johannesburg, is part of a large meteorite impact structure (an astrobleme). Dating back 2,023 million years, it is the oldest astrobleme found on Earth so far. Because the town of Vredefort is close to the geometric centre of the impact structure, researchers started calling it the Vredefort Dome, and the name is now used worldwide.
The Vredefort Meteorite Impact Structure bears witness to the world's greatest known single energy release event and provides evidence of the Earth's geological history. It contains high-quality, accessible geological sites that show a range of geological indicators of a complex meteorite impact structure, and is the only example to provide a full geological profile of an astrobleme below a crater floor.
